Then slide your door in the opening. You might need help from a few people, as solid wood prehung interior doors are very heavy. Ensure it is sitting flush and close in the hole, then open the door 90 degrees from the frame and shim under it so it stands still and doesn’t fall. It is better to have enough shims under your door, as you need the top of the frame to sit flush with the drywall.
You must install your shims opposite each other to create an even thickness. Once you do it, you can fix your door to a stud. Ensure it is flush with a straight edge and go through your door knob with a countersink drill, but just enough to sink the head of the screw. When everything looks just right, attach the door to the stud behind it like the top. Then screw through the shims working from the middle to the bottom.
As the hinge side is installed, close the shims below the door. Pay attention to your gaps and listen to the sound. If everything was done correctly, the door should close nicely.
Aligning a door frame is your next step. Adjust the shims until the gap between the door and frame is even. Secure the frame to the stud once the reveal looks good to you. For the bottom of the frame, once again, use shims to close a gap. When it seems even, nail the frame to the stud, check the reveal, and make a final adjustment before entirely securing.
Finally, score the shims with the drywall and snap them off. Then, attach pre-painted trim to the door frame, leaving a ¼ reveal. Fill any nail holes in the trim.
